Job Description
Summary of Responsibilities: Interacts with production facility personnel, refractory suppliers and procurement to provide cost effective refractory solutions for heat and metal containment. Responsible for testing, specifying and recommending refractories and refractory design for all metallurgical and finishing processes. Provides short term failure analysis of refractories from all metallurgical and finishing processes. Manage long and medium term projects relating to cost reduction and energy management with respect to refractories. Implements new technologies in refractory material applications, as well as, providing design and field installation input for large projects. Conducts audits of various aspects of refractory production processes and sampling practices and operates and maintains testing equipment or equipment being tested for use in various laboratory and production environments.

Experience or Qualifications Required:
Minimum of Master of Science Degree in Ceramic Engineering or Bachelor of Science Degree in Material Science, Ceramic Engineering or Metallurgy with 5 years experience in the areas of Refractories or high temperature process Metallurgy. Knowledge and experience with Physical and Mechanical testing procedures (ASTM, ISO) and both Chemical and Microstructural Evaluation of Materials (preferably ceramics/refractories). Knowledge of high temperature metallurgical processes and interaction with refractory materials a plus. Experience with field installation of refractory materials a plus. Candidate must have excellent computer (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Access, and Visual Basic) and communication (oral and written) skills. Willingness to travel (20-40% of time), for extended periods, into plant environments and interact with plant personnel in order to conduct experiments, coordinate sampling and testing activities, collect data, provide technical assistance or to focus on developmental activities.
Skills Desired:
Continuous focus on safety. Knowledge of database management, Cost Accounting for tracking cost effectiveness and Refractory Design and Installation (thermal and stress). Project Management and Problem Solving Experience (exposure to 6-sigma, O&I, Gantt or other problem solving systems); willingness to learn the operation of equipment in various laboratory and plant environments; ability to handle multiple work assignments with minimal supervision and direction; ability to communicate effectively; ability to work effectively as a member of a team; knowledge of refractory materials testing procedures.
